A question we often heare from clients is some version of: "Should I buy a natural diamond or a lab-grown one?" Our answer is always the same — it depends on what matters most to you. Which isn't something we can decide. But, what we can do is give you the information so you can make an informed decision for yourself.
What is a natural diamond?
Natural diamonds are formed deep within the Earth's mantle over billions of years, under extraordinary heat and pressure and then carried to the surface by volcanic activity. They are, by any measure, one of nature's most remarkable accidents — ancient, rare and geologically irreplaceable. The incredible origin story of diamonds is part of what gives them their cultural weight and, to a significant degree, their price.
What is a lab-grown diamond?
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — chemically, physically and optically identical to natural ones. The difference is how they come to be: they are created in a controlled laboratory environment using one of two methods, either High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT), which replicates the conditions under which natural diamonds form, or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), which grows a diamond crystal from a carbon-rich gas. The process takes weeks rather than billions of years, which is, depending on your perspective, either a marvel of science or, frankly, a little less romantic.
The practical differences
Price is the most immediate distinction between the two types of diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds typically cost a lot less than natural diamonds of comparable size and quality. This means you can often get a larger or higher-quality stone for your budget. On the flip side, lab-grown diamonds have depreciated quickly in value as production has scaled up, while natural diamonds have historically held their value better over time — though neither should be considered a liquid investment.
On the ethics and sustainability front, the picture is nuanced. Lab-grown diamonds sidestep concerns about conflict mining, but they are energy-intensive to produce. Natural diamonds, when sourced through reputable, certified channels — ask your jeweler about their sourcing practices — can be purchased with confidence.
What should you ask before you buy?
Whether you're considering natural or lab-grown, always ask for a grading report from a reputable gemological laboratory such as GIA or IGI, confirm the stone's origin and certification, and make sure your jeweler can answer your questions clearly and honestly. If they can't, keep shopping.
Remember: The right diamond is the one that feels right to you — for your budget, your values, and the story you want it to tell.
