The Art of Doing Nothing ... While Wearing Great Jewelry

It's August in the Gulf South, which means the heat is so relentless and so offensive, that the only reasonable response is to give into it. You are not going anywhere or accomplishing anything. No, ma'am. You are sitting on your porch or patio or in your courtyard — if you are blessed with one — moving as little as possible, sipping a cold drink and fanning yourself. And here's what we've learned after a lifetime of summers spent perfecting the art of the slow day: a little bit of lippy and the right jewelry make it better.

We're Southern women, what did you expect? But we're not talkin' a lot of jewelry — this is your yard, not a gala — one good piece goes a long way. Whether it's your favorite ring catching the morning light while you wrap both hands around your coffee cup on the patio or a delicate necklace resting against your collarbone during a low-key cocktail hour in the courtyard (when the sun has finally had the decency to drop below the roofline and someone had the good sense to bring out the bubbly), adding a hint of sparkle and shine to your wardrobe enhances the mood and adds a little bit more artfulness to the atmosphere.

There is something wonderful about being dressed down. We love a T-shirt moment, y'all. But including something beautiful in the mix — that hi-low vibe — is a small act of intention, even on a day that has no agenda. It says, I am not doing much today, but I am doing it with a certain joie de vivre.

The dog days of late summer are brutal but, in their own way, still some of the best ones. Mornings are soft and languorous (and sometimes even breezy) before the heat sets in. The evenings, especially with a ceiling fan turning lazily overhead and a glass of something cold in hand, have a golden, unhurried quality we rarely experience during the cooler months. So, while you're leaning into slowing it down, wear something you love. Go nowhere in particular and do it with panache.
