What Is a Right Hand Ring and Why Does It Matter?

If you've ever admired a stunning cocktail ring on someone's right hand and wondered whether there was a story behind how they came to be worn specifically there — there is. The right hand ring isn't just a pretty bauble. It has both meaning and power.

Then and Now

For centuries, rings worn on the left hand carried the weight of tradition. Think engagement rings, wedding bands and the language of partnership and commitment. In many cultures, the right hand also symbolized love and vows, depending on where you lived in the world. In the the Middle Ages and the Renaissance however, wearing a ring on the right hand, such as a signet ring or family crest, related to family pride and was used in business (to seal documents in wax, for example). In the early 2000s, the concept of right hand rings got a more formal name when diamond industry marketers launched a campaign encouraging women to celebrate themselves with right hand rings. But the marketing came behind an existing trend in the West (and older traditions in India and other parts of the world) of women wearing rings on their right hand to bring good luck or celebrate milestones, accomplishments and themselves.

Today, a right hand ring is, simply put, a ring you buy for yourself. It marks no one else's milestone. It requires no occasion, no partner, no permission. It says something about who you are right now — your taste, your confidence and the chapter you're in. For women who have spent years buying gifts for everyone else, there is something satisfying about choosing a piece for yourself.

How to wear it

There are no rules — which is the point! Some women prefer a single, bold statement piece, like our Green With Plenty ring with its cushion-cut green quartz — worn alone on the right ring finger. Others love a stack of slimmer bands that tell a story across multiple fingers.

The bottom line

The right hand ring is less a jewelry category than a philosophy: that you are worth celebrating, that you don't need a reason, and that the best gift you can give yourself is something beautiful that you'll wear for years.

Cheers! 🥂
