Engagement Ring Shopping 101: What to Know Before You Say Yes to the Ring

Engagement Ring Shopping 101: What to Know Before You Say Yes to the Ring

Engagement ring shopping can feel overwhelming fast. Melanie here: As a Diamond Council of America certified jeweler, I want to make it a little less so — because understanding a few basics changes everything about how you shop and what you choose.

Setting Styles: Where Design Lives

The setting is the architecture of the ring — it determines how the stone sits, how light interacts with it (think sparkle and shine) and how well it holds up to daily wear. Prong settings, the most classic choice, elevate the stone and maximize light exposure, letting it catch and reflect brilliantly from every angle. Bezel settings encircle the stone in metal, offering a sleeker, more modern look and excellent protection for the stone. Halo settings surround the center stone with a ring of smaller stones, adding visual size and sparkle. Each style suits a different aesthetic and lifestyle, so think about how the ring will live on the hand every single day — not just on the day it's presented.

Metals: The Foundation of the Ring

The most popular choice for engagement rings in the U.S. is 14k yellow gold (read more in our Gold 101 post), and for good reason: it's durable, warm in color and holds up beautifully to everyday wear. White gold offers that bright, silvery, cool look many people love, though it requires occasional rhodium replating over time. (Rhodium is a rare and precious metal and using it as plating is a process that coats jewelry with a thin, bright layer of the metal. This is a standard industry practice, providing a brighter, more high-polished shine on the jewelry, covering the natural yellowish tint of white gold and helping to prevent tarnish on silver.) Rose gold, with its copper-warmed blush tone, has become a beloved option for its romantic quality and durability. For an engagement ring you plan to wear for decades, 14k is the reliable sweet spot between gold content and wearability.

Natural vs. Lab-Grown vs. Moissanite

Natural diamonds are formed over billions of years deep in the Earth — rare, geologically irreplaceable and carrying a certain romance of origin. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and optically identical to natural stones, typically at a lower price point. (Read more about the differences between natural and lab-created diamonds.) Moissanite, a lab-created gemstone, has a high brilliance index — meaning it catches light with extraordinary fire — at a considerably more accessible price than diamonds. While diamonds score a 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, making it the hardest gemstone used in jewelry, Moissanite scores 9.25 to 9.5, (making it the second-hardest). The right choice depends on your priorities: origin story, budget or all of the above.

Timeline: Planning Ahead Matters

Holiday proposals are among the most popular of the year, which means now is exactly the right time to start thinking. At Maison Mariann, the majority of our pieces are made to order — handcrafted specifically for you, not pulled from a shelf — with a turnaround of about two weeks (depending on customizations). That timeline is a gift in terms of quality and personalization and it also means there is plenty of time before the holidays if you start soon.

Introducing The Mariann

Our first engagement ring, The Mariann, was inspired by the ring Stacy's mother, Mariann, wore every day. The original ring featured a yellow gold band that swoops around the center stone in a graceful swirl. I kept that swirl because it's the heart of the design, and gave everything else a cleaner, more modern line. The Mariann features a 14k yellow gold band with white gold prongs and a stunning 6.5mm colorless moissanite center stone. Want a diamond? A color gemstone? Or a diamond of your own to reset the way Mariann did? We'd love to design it together.
